When I was in junior high my best friend and I developed this little system to make choices a bit simpler. If we had several choices that all seemed really good, we would write each down on a scrap of paper and put them in a bucket and choose randomly. Whatever came out, we would do. Eventually this evolved into an even easier system that took even less materials and preparation–Pick a Hand. It went like this: First narrow down your options into two. Select one person to be the picker and one person to “hold” the choices. The person “holding” the choices would silently assign Olive Garden to their right hand and Chevy’s to their left hand or vice versa. Then the picker would choose a hand. If the choice came out as Chevy’s and there was only pure excitement, great! We did it. If however, there was the slightest disappointment, then we instantly knew we preferred the other choice and would go to Olive Garden with enthusiasm. We used Pick a Hand for a million things throughout high school and well into our early twenties. It’s a nearly flawless system for choosing which top to wear, what restaurant to eat at, or which movie to watch. Because even if you choose left and you aren’t perfectly satisfied you just go with the other choice and are content.
